Protests Erupt in Ramallah Against Palestinian President Abbas after Gaza Hospital Attack

Security forces in Ramallah have used tear gas and stun grenades to disperse protesters who were rallying against Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas. The protests were sparked by the recent Israeli attack on Al-Ahli al-Arabi Hospital in Gaza, which is believed to be the single deadliest incident in the region since October 7. The strike resulted in the deaths of over 500 people and drew condemnation from around the world.

Protests were staged at Israel’s embassies in Turkey and Jordan, as well as near the United States Embassy in Lebanon. Israel has denied responsibility for the attack but continues its bombing campaign in Gaza. In response to the hospital bombardment and other attacks, Abbas cancelled a planned meeting with US President Joe Biden in Jordan.

Upon his return to the West Bank, Abbas was met with hundreds of demonstrators in Ramallah’s central Manara Square. The protesters expressed frustration with the Palestinian Authority, with some showing support for Hamas leaders. Rock throwing and clashes with Palestinian security forces also occurred in the West Bank cities of Nablus, Tubas, and Jenin.

The protests in the West Bank highlight the long-standing Palestinian anger towards Abbas and his security forces, who have been criticized for coordinating with Israel on security matters in the territory.
