Ohanaeze Ndigbo, the apex Igbo socio-cultural organization, has called on President Bola Tinubu to provide special intervention funds for the Ministry of Works headed by Dave Umahi to carry out infrastructural rehabilitation, facelifts, and constructions of cement and concrete technology in the southeast and other parts of the country.

Ohanaeze’s call followed the Federal Government’s directive that contractors should switch from asphalting methods to cement technology for road pavements in the southeast and other parts of the country.

The apex Igbo organization commended the Federal Government for its directive, saying it would ensure the construction of quality roads with a 30-year lifespan.

In a statement by its factional Secretary General, Okechukwu Isiguzoro, Ohanaeze, however, expressed concern that the Ministry of Works might not have the necessary funds to carry out the directive.

The group, therefore, called on President Tinubu to use the “Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) to provide special intervention funds for the Ministry of Works.”

The statement reads: “Ohanaeze said this would enable the ministry to sort out the contractors and ensure that they deliver quality roads with a lifespan of 30 years.

“Tinubu should ensure that funds will not stop the Federal Road Contractors from ensuring that Nigerians enjoy quality roads through the construction of federal highways with cement and concrete technology.”

Ohanaeze said Nigerians are in support of the Ministry of Works directives to have the contracts of contractors reviewed to meet with demands of Nigerians who are in dire need of quality roads across the country.

The group said Tinubu will always prioritize the aspirations of Nigerians, especially in the infrastructural revolution in line with the RENEWED HOPE AGENDA.

Ohanaeze said that the “NNPC special intervention funds will enhance the capacity of the Ministry of Works to ensure that the Federal Road Contractors will abide by the new directives of using Cement technology which is costlier than mere asphalting the road that perishes after the rainy season.”
