Police planned to apply for a banning order but abandoned the idea when he said he would oppose it

A frustrated Leicester City fan was detained by security guards at the King Power Stadium after he threw a flag onto the pitch during the Boxing Day game, which saw the Foxes hammered by Newcastle United. Gas engineer Jake Robertson was then spoken to by the police and he admitted hurling the flag, which landed near to where players and officials were standing at the time during the match, which ended in a 0-3 loss for the Foxes.

At Leicester Magistrates’ Court on Friday Robertson, of Rowan Drive, Anstey, pleaded guilty to throwing a missile onto the playing area, which is an offence under the Football Act 1991. The court heard that since Boxing Day he had been banned from attending any football matches at King Power Stadium or any away games for Leicester City FC.

He was due to get a longer banning order but the Crown Prosecution Service said Leicestershire Police had agreed to drop that application after Robertson told the court he intended to oppose it – which would have meant a further court hearing on another day. That means he can start going to matches again.

Prosecutor Sally Bedford told the court: “This defendant was at the King Power Stadium on December 26 – the Boxing Day match. He was in the stands and people monitoring the CCTV saw the defendant throwing a flag onto the pitch near the goals.

“At the time there were a number of players and officials in that vicinity but none were struck. The defendant was detained by security and the police then spoke to him and he indicated he had thrown the flag in frustration.”

Robertson, representing himself in court, said he didn’t want to say anything in his defence. The magistrates gave him a 12-month conditional discharge and ordered him to pay £85 court costs and a £26 victim surcharge.
