Never compromise purpose of oversight functions, Speaker cautions committee members
The Speaker of Nasarawa State House of Assembly, Alhaji Ibrahim Abdullahi, has advised the standing committees of the house against compromise while carrying out oversight functions in Ministries, Department and Agencies (MDAs).
Abdullahi who gave the advice during proceedings in Lafia on Monday, said that not compromising would be in the best interest of the state and for development to thrive.
He said that the oversight function was not to witch-hunt anybody but to ensure that the right things were done for the overall development of the state.
“In the process of the oversight function, there might be side talk, hear say, but do your job as expected and as enshrined in the constitution.
“The constitution has empowered the house to embark on oversight functions in order to check the activities of MDAs.
“Since it is a constitutional responsibilities, we must carry out this exercise with all sense of seriousness.
“We appropriated funds to MDAs and we needs to know how such monies are expended for the benefit of our people,” he said.
The speaker gave the committee two weeks for the oversight functions which began on Monday.
He urged the management and staff of MDAs to give the necessary support and cooperation to the various standing committees to enable them to succeed.
He added that the lawmakers should take the exercise with all seriousness it deserved.
The House Leader, Alhaji Tanko Tunga, moved a motion for the house to proceed on two weeks oversight functions which was seconded by the Minority Leader, Mr Abel Bala.
