The Argentine claimed the award in London on Monday, January 15, 2024, accumulating the highest number of points ahead of Erling Haaland and Kylian Mbappe. FIFA disclosed the voting process, which involved input from coaches, captains of national teams, and selected journalists.
Messi and Haaland secured 48 points each, with Mbappe securing the third position with a total of 39 points.

According to FIFA rules when two players are both tied on the same number of points, then the winner will be selected based on the number of five points scores from the votes cast by the men’s national team captains as per article 12 of the Rules of Association
