The Lagos State Government has banned the use and distribution of Styrofoam and other single-use plastics in the state.
The Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, announced the decision, citing the environmental impact of these materials, especially non-biodegradable Styrofoam.
The ban aims to address issues like clogged drainage channels and littering on roads and markets.
Wahab directed the Lagos Waste Management Authority and the Kick Against Indiscipline to implement the ban, urging them to crack down on production companies and distribution outlets.
He emphasized that laws and regulations supporting the ban exist but have not been adequately enforced.
Wahab warned of heavy fines and penalties for non-compliance, emphasizing the need for alternatives to single-use plastics for the well-being of the environment and residents.
